| “America’s
low-literate population is our nation’s greatest untapped
resource.” – Blair Kraft, Program Coordinator
Despite our community’s reputation for academic excellence,
adult literacy is still a problem. Over 27,000 men and women,
or 12% of Washtenaw County’s adult population, have
very low literacy skills. These men and women live throughout
the county, from the poorest areas to the most affluent. With
numbers this high, chances are good that you know someone
in need of tutoring help, whether or not you’re aware
of it.

Literacy is the keystone to success in our culture. Adults
who lack these skills often struggle with finding employment,
helping children with schoolwork and communicating with medical
professionals. Not being able to communicate is an isolating
and frightening experience.
Our entire community benefits when adults improve their literacy
skills. Men and women who can read, write and speak effectively
are better equipped to make a positive contribution as parents,
employees and community members.
