| Washtenaw Literacy is a critical
piece of the educational continuum in our community.
We have over 35 years experience in education focused on individual goals.
Our program is open to Washtenaw County adults, ages
16 and older, who want to improve their reading and writing
or English as a second language skills. All of our programs
are offered at no charge to our learners.
One-on-one
tutoring
Our one-on-one tutoring program helps motivated adults improve
their skills and reach their goals. Volunteer tutors prepare
a lesson each week that focuses on learners' individual strengths,
needs and goals. Weekly tutoring sessions are 2 hours long
and take place at times and public places that are convenient
for the tutor-learner pair.

Group tutoring
Group tutoring offers adults the opportunity to practice their
reading and writing or English as a second language skills
in a friendly, informal setting. ESL groups focus mainly on
speaking and listening skills. Basic literacy groups focus
on reading and writing. Our group programming changes from
time to time to respond to community needs. Please check our
group schedules to see what's being offered now.
Training and Volunteer Support
Washtenaw Literacy prides itself on providing the best literacy training available. One-on-one volunteer tutors complete a nationally recognized
15-hour training before they are placed with an adult learner. Group tutoring volunteers receive comprehensive "on the job" training as well as
other opportunities for more formal learning.
Our sensitivity and awareness training is ideal for businesses and organizations whose workforce or client base include low-literate or English as a second language individuals.
We teach participants how to identify communication barriers and address them with immediate communication strategies, workplace adaptations and referral
information to Washtenaw Literacy's tutoring services.
Washtenaw Literacy's Mentor Program provides extensive volunteer tutor support. Peer mentors provide individual mentoring for new tutors, administer the
Tutor Learner Resource Center, and provide continuing education workshops for tutors as well as an annual day-long conference, Power Tutoring.
