KWL
Before you begin to read, use the title or picture to discuss what you expect from the passage. Always, ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE.
Make three columns on a piece of paper. Label the first column "know," second column "want to know", third column "learned."
Before reading have the learner fill in the first and second columns. Discuss your expectations based on the title or picture.
After reading, fill in the last column.
You can collect a series of these KWLs and use them to track the amount and diversity of your reading.
You can also track progress in the learner's ability to complete the columns and make better guesses.
